Encouraging Youth Retention and Entrepreneurship

The County Announces Funding for The ROC

The County’s Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) is excited to announce an investment of $5 000 in the ROC’s Youth Centre, opening this fall in Picton. This announcement is a component of the CEDC’s efforts to encourage local youth to build their futures in the County. Youth retention was identified by the Commission as a key priority in the County’s community development efforts.
“A key component of this priority was to engage schools and youth agencies in the County to develop and deploy youth entrepreneurship programming throughout our community,” remarked CEDC Chair Bill Roberts—also County Councillor for Sophiasburgh. He added that “ROC was the obvious choice” to deploy this programming. The County’s Community Development Department plans to work with the ROC to develop such programming. Expected initiatives range from mentorship programs that connect youth with business owners to organized tours and educational workshops that would give participants a glimpse into some of the County’s key industries. An emphasis will be placed on teaching youth about social enterprise, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.
Darlene Thompson, Executive Director of the ROC, noted that “the Youth Centre plans to open its doors to youth this fall.” Her colleague, Hilary Fennell—the Program Director at the ROC—added “Programs would be free of charge to youth and we would arrange transportation to and from offsite workshops. The ROC works with kids to create programming that not only provides a foundation for their future, but really appeals to them.” Fennell noted that the ROC already has several local entrepreneurs interested in providing workshops on their trade to the kids. In addition to the programming outlined above, the Youth Centre will be providing after school drop-in activities and programs like cooking classes, fitness sessions, and tutoring/homework support.
